Wow! Had so much fun this past weekend with the family! I tagged along on a trip to Mustang Island to hang out at the beach and see the sand sculptings at the Texas Sand Sculpting Festival. It was so different than it used to be when the kids were little and we lived close to there. Now, it’s all organized w/vendors, music and the works. It used to be sponsored by Budweiser and a couple of radio stations (at least that’s what is in my memory). Apparently, the ‘Wind Fest’ was also going on…there were tons of kites in varying shapes, sizes and colors all up and down the beach…really fun to watch! We had a great time playing in the COLD water, digging in the sand, building things and hanging out. The weather was beautiful, beautiful, a perfect beach day.
On Saturday, everyone agreed to head over to Malaquite Beach on the farther side of South Padre Island (about 15 miles down the beach from Mustang). It was a walk down memory lane for me…I was surprised to find it still as remote as it was when the kids were young. This was our getaway when we lived in Bishop. Just a really great place for families. There were tons of man ‘o wars and jelly fish scattered along the beach though. I guess they were there from the evening tide the night before. So, we had to be careful, but it was a great way to let the children see what types of things they needed to watch out for. We spent the afternoon just being carefree and enjoying each other and the ocean.
I’m sure the Walston blog will have some great stories and pics so I don’t want to steal their thunder. It was, after all, Ean, Hannah and Claire’s first time! I couldn’t believe it had been that long since I’d been there…but, the last time I was there truly was when Adri was a little, little boy! Wow! No wonder I’ve been having withdrawals…the ocean is my favorite place to visit!
There were tons of memories for me as we travelled there and back, some of them having to do with the bach, some of them from before the children were with me and some of them from the years we travelled that same highway driving back & forth to Devine or Kerrville to visit family. Memories are wonderful, no matter what changes time has brought along the way. The memories were good, familiar, warm. And, they are mine to keep forever. As long as my brain holds out!!! LOL!
It’s fun watching my children make their own memories to keep. And, I’m glad they still invite me along.
P.S. I hope sometime when they go again, they will get the chance to be at the beach at night when the moon is full…it’s so terrifically and undescribably beautiful and powerful all at the same time.
Thanks Guys for a great weekend!
